OIL PAINTINGS BY RAFI METZ

These three paintings took eleven years to complete. Using 19th century studio photographs, I sought to replace the subjects into a natural environment. Over the years, the idea developed that in some way I was 'restoring the souls' that were stolen by the camera. The shimmering hoops serve as a 'transport lens.' It is also notable that the people in each painting are painted with the same palette as the landscape in which they are placed; 'resolved,' as it were, from their very surroundings.
